Spencer Howard is an educator, playwright, producer and CEO/Artistic Director of LearningTree Productions with a mission to help teachers utilize theatre as a teaching tool and provide meaningful, culturally relevant theatre experiences for youth. A certified Talented Theatre teacher with a Highly Effective rating. He facilitates professional development workshops to help teacher integrate arts into their curriculum. As an actor, he has appeared in numerous productions and was nominated Best Actor for his performance of the one-man show, Satchmo at the Waldorf. Spencer has written for several PBS children televisions programs and is the author of Theatre in the Classroom and the critically acclaimed, Freedom Summer (a two act play about students and music of the civil rights movement), Freedom Summer Study Guide – A Chronology of the Civil Rights Movement-1954-1966 Twelve Years That Changed America. He has written numerous plays with his plays Dew Drop Inn and The Spirit of the Drum earning a playwrighting fellowship from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. While Artist-in-Residence with the River Road African American Museum, he became creator, writer and producer of the five-part docuseries, Africans on the Mississippi. Coming soon, a twenty-minute short film, Cuttin’ Cane, about the historical town of Donaldsonville, Louisiana.
