On Thursday, February 2, 2017 our BADWest meeting will be How to Form a Production Company and Option Agreements  with guest panelist, Attorney Jaia Thomas.  Jaia Thomas will walk attendees through a step-by-step process of forming a production company as well as provide an overview of key legal distinction between entity structures. Ms. Thomas will also discuss the ins and outs of Option and Purchase Agreements

Jaia A ThomasJaia A. Thomas is a Los Angeles-based sports, entertainment and intellectual property attorney. She has over ten years of legal experience practicing on both coasts. She specializes in assisting clients with transactional and intellectual property matters. She regularly drafts agreements involving the development and production of television programs and has negotiated a bevy of deals with networks such as ABC, NBC, CBS and BRAVO. She also regularly works with filmmakers to draft, negotiate and finalize above-the-line agreements and below-the-line agreements.


Ms. Thomas is currently an adjunct professor at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she teaches a course titled, "Copyright Law in the Entertainment Industry." The course provides students with an overview of copyright law and how it affects the television and film. Prior to her appointment at UCLA, Ms. Thomas was an adjunct professor at American University in Washington DC where she provided students with the tools necessary to launch and successfully sustain production companies. Ms. Thomas has also served as a guest lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown University and Vassar College.


Ms. Thomas has been cited as a legal expert in such publications as The New York Times and USA Today. She has also served as a panelist for such organizations as the Los Angeles Bar Association and Beverly Hills Bar Association. Ms. Thomas has had scholarly works published in the Journal of Sports Media, American Bar Association, National Bar Association and several legal journals.


A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ms. Thomas is a graduate of Colgate University (BA) and The George Washington University Law School (JD).
