Jim Brown's Amer-I-Can Dream - BADWest 4th Monday Free Screening April 23, 2018

Almost half a century after Jim Brown left the game of football, he remains known as the most dominant running back ever. Hailed by many as one of the greatest athletes in American history, Brown headed from the football field to Hollywood stardom. However his accomplishments in film and sports pale in comparison to his relentless commitment to social change.

Mayme Clayton Library and Museum in association with the BADWest St. Clair Bourne 4th Monday Documentary Series Presents:

Jim Brown's Amer-I-Can Dream

Directed by

Aurora Ferlin

For the past 20 years the NFL legend has been unwavering in his mission to end the deadly epidemic of violence among America's youth. Senseless killings have claimed the lives of thousands of young men and women. The death-toll has reached inconceivable heights.

In  Jim Brown's Amer-I-Can Dream, filmmaker Aurora Ferlin takes you into the heart of Jim Brown's Amer-I-Can foundation where former rival gang members re-invent themselves from predators to peacemakers. According to Brown, a lifetime marred by death and incarceration has molded these men into the perfect vehicles of change. The odds seemingly stacked against them we follow this unlikely band of brothers as they set out to change their lives and the lives of those around them. This intimate journey defies the typical snap shot of street culture and becomes a compelling roller-coaster ride, where the commitment of everyone involved is put to the ultimate test

Aurora FerlinAurora Ferlin is a director, writer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California. Her feature debut, the documentary "Jim Brown's Amer-I-Can Dream" won the prestigious Greg Gund Standing Up Award at the 2016 Cleveland International Film Festival. Born to a Belgian mother and a Rwandan father, Aurora was raised on the outskirts of Brussels, Belgium. A graduate from the University of Brussels, she continued her education at Florida A&M University. Ferlin graduated from FAMU with a Master's of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism. She was honored with the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame Award for her final thesis project "Breaking The Silence", a short film about two young African Americans living with full-blown AIDS.

Since moving to Los Angeles, she has been freelancing as a director, producer, writer and editor for a variety of clients including MTV Europe, Revolt, BET/Centric, TV One and All Def Digital. Most recently she has produced and directed non-scripted shows for the Africa Channel and she is the co-creator of the networks' new original series "Shades of You". A human-interest show covering stories through the eyes of people of the African diaspora.

At the moment she is in the final stages of post-production on her latest project "Mothers". A narrative short which she both wrote and directed about a mother seeking justice for her murdered son.

There will be a discussion after the screening.
