THE TWELVE DISCIPLES OF NELSON MANDELA
A Film by Thomas Allen Harris
May 21, 2012 7:00 PM at the Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum, Culver City
The Black Association of Documentary Filmmakers-West presents its May St. Clair Bourne Fourth Mondays Documentary Series free screening of THE TWELVE DISCIPLES OF NELSON MANDELA, produced and directed by Thomas Allen Harris. The film was co-executive produced by the late St. Clair Bourne himself.
Part documentary, part dramatic re–enactment, THE TWELVE DISCIPLES OF NELSON MANDELA is both a story about the African National Congress in exile from the perspective of the foot soldiers, and also a son’s journey towards reconciliation with a father. Harris began the film as a tribute to Benjamin Pule Leinaeng, his late stepfather. The project soon became a full exploration of one of the most eventful times in South African history, mixed with personal remembrances of Leinaeng’s time in the United States. THE TWELVE DISCIPLES OF NELSON MANDELA won Best Documentary Awards at the 2006 Los Angeles Pan African Film Festival and the Santa Cruz Film Festival, received Honorable Mention as Audience Favorite at the Bermuda International Film Festival, and was nominated for a 2006 Independent Spirit Award. A co-production of the Independent Television Service (ITVS), in association with P.O.V./American Documentary and the National Black Programming Consortium, the film aired on PBS.
This event is made possible by the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC).
*PLEASE NOTE: This event is being held on the 3rd Monday in May, May 21st, due to the Memorial Day Holiday on May 28th.
The screening will begin at 7:00pm, followed by a Q&A about the film.
St. Clair Bourne’s Fourth Monday Documentary Film Series, named after the late founder of BADWest, is a monthly gathering for arts enthusiasts and artists actively working in film, television and theater. Its purpose is to stimulate discussion on culture, political principles, creative techniques and the exchange of ideas that can help us all make the most powerful work possible to help create a culture of resistance in these important times.
